‘When you ask, if I love you’

what i feel for you, isn’t love
it’s the last drag of cigarette
in this tear-gassed night
smoke entering my chest
kidneys, bile duct

what i feel for you, isn’t love
organs turn into embers
as i hold in my breath
should my love escape
in a gentle puff

what i feel for you, isn’t love
it’s shoes made of lead
i wore to the shore
waves burying me deeper
in a cosmic rush

what i feel for you, isn’t love
it’s borrowed seconds
pooling in my footprints
before the next wave
obliterates

what i feel for you, isn’t love
isn’t mine to bargain
it’s the call of a prayer
on the tip of my tongue
in a language i’m yet to learn
